If I Were a Rich Man.

From Fifty Million Frenchmen Can’t Be Wrong by Cole Porter.

In the midst of COVID lockdowns, this is the video I shared at my thesis defence on June 18, 2020. My pianist, Brian Cho, recorded the piano part after we talked about some interpretive ideas. You're hearing his recording of the piano part through a speaker I put in the piano. Not as good as live collaboration, but as close as we could get in this case. Enjoy!

This recording is taken from a live performance of Rossini's La Cenerentola with Western University's Opera Program. (2014)

Don Magnifico is woken up by his loud, obnoxious daughters. After yelling at them for a bit about their lack of consideration, he goes on to tell them about an amazing dream they interrupted in which he was magically transformed into an ass, or donkey. He interprets his dream for his daughters, predicting that it represents both his ascension to power and his future as the grandsire of many royal offspring. Performed live with UWOpera in 2014.
